The 2009 Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH), Fair has come to a close. The event opened Friday September 25, at 6:30 PM and continued thru Sunday September 27th. Highlighting Friday night was the Top Cats moving the crowd with great music past and present. There were plenty of people on hand opening day and to accommodate them there was plenty of great food and activities. Kingfishland.com was on hand each day of the fair, and working was never this much fun. This great annual event once again proved to be a solid family oriented event that had a little something for all to enjoy. The OLPH Fair being just one of so many events that makes Plaquemines Parish such a wonderful place to live, and visit.
On Saturday the fair kicked off with the Parade which started at the Belle Chasse High School, and made its way down Highway 23 (Belle Chasse Hwy), to the fairs grounds. The parade was a grand event for the Parish as people lined HWY 23 to watch the festivities, and were treated to throws that would rival the best of Mardi Gras parades. It was truly a Parish event as businesses and people came together. Parish President Billy Nungesser rode in one of the new Parish Jeep/off road vehicles tossing Mardi Gras cups. The Parish also displayed 2 of its new 2 wheel personal Gyro scooters. Leading the parade was a team from the Belle Chasse volunteer Fire
Department. Mcgruff The crime dog also made an appearance for this festive parade.
The fair itself began right after the parade arrived. The kindergarden class began things with a song, and the festivities were under way. The Fair raised money through auctions held between events on the main stage, and through bids on many great items which were displayed at the fairs entrance. Music was the fairs evening menu with the Top Cats on stage Friday night. Saturday night the music started a little earlier as Moody Cowboy kicked things off playing from 3 to 6 PM. Then from 7 to 10 PM it was Abdul D Tentmaker. Sunday the Big River Band was on stage from 2 to 4 PM, and closing out the fair from 5:30 to 8:30 PM was the Cheeze Wheez band.
If smile measure the success of the event then this one was truly an event to end all events. One thing that is certain, the many people who work behind the scenes for events like this can be proud. Those on the staff, the volunteers, the local sponsors, all helped put together an event enjoyed by thousands. All thats left to do now is step back and start prepareing for next years return of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) Fair.
