BATTLE OF THE CHAMPIONS
I am sure everyone in Port Sulfer knows the outcome of Friday nights game in the big Battle of the Champions.  If you don't it was a 28 to 26 win for the South Plaquemines Hurricanes.  The victory also marked the first time the Hurricanes have defeated the Belle Chasse Cardinals since before Katrina.  The year was 2002 when the Hurricanes last had Parish bragging rights.
I predicted that the hurricanes would win this event, but when I watched the first half of the game I was fearful that I would not see that happen.  The Belle Chasse Cardinals arrived, fired up, and ready to lay down the law of the field.  By the midway point the Cardinals had a comfortable 18 to 12 lead, and their play was enough to take them to a victory.
Returning to the field for the second half the Cardinals were different as a team.  The play calling was not the same, and the Cardinals failed to take full advantage of a few Hurricane mistakes and penalties.  Two long plays by the Hurricanes, a 95 yard run to score followed by a 2 point conversion brought the Hurricanes within 6 points.  It seemed after the break it was the Hurricanes who were hungry and wanted the win and bragging rights.
We look for a repeat of the championship year for the South Plaquemines Hurricanes.  We also see a great chance for the Cardinals to be a force this season.  A good look at the statistics of the game shows Belle Chasse outgained the Hurricanes in rushing, passing, and total yards.  This is a bright side for their future.  They also earned more penalty yards which is a place they need to work on.  The Cardinals will be a force to reckon with if they can keep up play at this level.  Congratulations to the Hurricanes and their the proud holder of the trophy and bragging rights as the 2009 Champions.

Belle Chasse Drainage Improvements

•    Tractor Pump – A FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant funded the hydraulic study and design of drainage improvements from Cazalard St. to the Belle Chasse Tunnel and from the Intercoastal Canal to the Algiers Outfall Canal.
"This is unbelievable that we still drain an area of the parish with a tractor pump.  Permits with the Corps have been slow because of all the levee work, but people on the northside of the tunnel should rest assured that help is coming.  We’ve applied for a Corps permit for a new automated pump to replace the tractor pump,” said Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser.

•    New St. Drainage – Administration is negotiating with landowners to improve the drainage system along New St. which drains Planters Canal Road, N. Industry St., Jay St., Burmaster St., and others.

•     PPG Heavy Equipment is finishing the excavation of a new canal/large ditch behind the houses on Good News.  Instead of draining through Good News Ave., this new ditch will drain the large cow pasture directly to Barriere Canal.  (Show layout)
“We will keep working on these drainage improvements until everyone in this parish is safe from flooding during heavy rains.  We will continue to work on solutions.  We will continue to think outside the box like we have in the area behind Good News which has had drainage issues for years.  We’re excited about making these improvements so people don’t have to hold their breath every time we have rain.  Although we’ve had hurdles from everything from permits to right of way issues we’re continuing to work until every area of Plaquemines Parish has sufficient drainage,” said Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser.
